Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...

Largs Thistle 35s, sponsored by Cullis Amusements, were beaten 3-1 by Stewarton on Friday in Inverclyde. This really now takes away any chance we had of winning the league.

A great effort by the team again and with only 12 players in the squad for the game and none of us a goalie we knew it was going to be hard playing against experienced players such as Gary Harkins, Steve Farrell and Mark Roberts.

Two deflections and a penalty beat Robi Giovino who played in goal; 3-1 at half time and in the second half it was all Largs but the goals would just not come.

This week we are at home to Northside.

It was Benburb v Pollok for me at the weekend.

A 4-1 victory for the Bens, which was well deserved.

Going in at half time 1-0 down after being the better team could have made the heads go down but after the interval they blew Pollok away and should have scored more than four.

My ex-Largs team mate Frank Lovering, the Bens' president, was over the moon although he did find time to tell the ref what he thought of his performance.

A poor result for Largs against Clydebank, although after talking to the Beith 'scout' who was at the game, his comment was: "Largs did ok but lost poor goals." I also spoke to him before the game and the Largs players he mentioned were Lapsley and Martin.

With both players on the bench it may be something that will surprise Beith in the forthcoming game.

Result of the day in league for me has to be the Bens' result. Everyone I spoke to, with the exception of a well-known 'junior' man, expected Pollok to roll up and take all three points.

I mentioned before about the antics of Morton manager Dougie Imrie on the touchline but Paul Lovering, the Bens manager, is even better.

So England have made it through to the semi finals of the World Cup along with Australia, who they now play, Sweden and Spain.

For me the games might not be technically great but are really competitive. England look to be the favourites now.

I see Cristiano Ronaldo won his first trophy with Al-Nassr after his move to Saudi Arabia, scoring twice in the Arab Club Championship final. The man just keeps going.
