TRAVELLERS in Largs and the surrounding area are being affected by Storm Gerrit after high winds and heavy rain struck the west coast of Scotland.

The Largs-Cumbrae ferry was suspended from the start of service, the there are reports of heavy surface water on the A78 in Skelmorlie and flooding in Fairlie.

There have also been reports of snow on the A760 Haylie Brae, with reports of two lorries becoming stuck and cars attempting to turn back.

Motorists say the A760 is currently at a 'standstill' and recommended that other drivers avoid the area.

Police Scotland have been contacted for more information.

CalMac had planned to attempt a sailing from Largs to Cumbrae at 9.15am, but the company later announced that sailing would no longer take place due to a "technical issue".

 

 

The service eventually resumed at 11.15am.

There are also reports that the inside lane of the A78 is flooded between Inverkip and Greenock, near the former IBM site.

The A78 was also shut following a road accident in Skelmorlie at around 7am, though it is now open to traffic once more.

A Traffic Scotland spokesperson said: "All lanes have now reopened in both directions following the earlier collision."
