A NEW cash point could soon be coming to Cumbrae after the closure of the island's only outside ATM.

Proposals have been lodged by design and planning consultant Des Ager, on behalf of Euronet Worldwide to add an ATM outside Millport Premier's Store on Guildford Street.

The Bank of Scotland closed their branch and ATM nearby last month.

The closure left the islanders with only one option to withdraw and deposit cash without having to travel to the mainland - the Post Office facility inside the Premier Store.

The new plans, if approved by North Ayrshire Council, would see an ATM installed outside the same business.

Under the proposals, the new cash point would be installed through the shopfront window to the left of the entrance door and would see the return of free 24-hour banking facilities for customers.

At this stage, the frequency of restocking the ATM has not been confirmed until the "pattern of transactions" has been established.

A design and access statement, which can be viewed publicly on the local authority's website, states: "The proposed ATM will give the principal benefit to the community of providing cash on demand to customers of Millport’s Premier Store, 24 Guildford Street, Millport and customers of adjacent retailers.

"The installation has been designed to anticipate and overcome the restriction that would prevent disabled persons from making full use of the service to be provided together with the needs of more vulnerable people from protection of attack and intimidation.

"The frequency of replenishment cannot be known until the ATM has been installed and a pattern of transactions established.

"It is expected to have a reasonably high level of transactions which based on other existing installations would mean that replenishment would be approximately at every seven days."

Island-based councillor Todd Ferguson told the News: "I would be very supportive of the application for an additional service outside the Premier store as it would alleviate the pressure on those working in the shop, particularly during the busy summer season.

"It also allows access to cash outside of the business hours of the Premier as well."
