AN APPEAL has been issued for help in finding the family of a Lancaster bomber airman who came from Largs.

Flight Sergeant Thomas Robert Cairns was killed in action while serving in the Netherlands more than 80 years ago.

The appeal comes from the Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, which was contacted by a Dutch heritage group aiming to honour those who died or were wounded in the area during the Second World War.

Flight Sergeant Cairns was a bomb aimer with 83 Squadron RAF.

He was killed in action on May 13, 1943, and his family details record him coming from Largs.

The Eemnes Freedom Monument Association is creating a memorial information plaquette to posthumously honour the crew of the crashed Lancaster bomber, W4955.

They are aiming to unveil the plaquette at a dedication ceremony in the village of Eemnes, near Utrecht, on May 13, 81 years to the day since the plane crashed on arable land close to what is now the General Cemetery in Eemnes.

The group hopes that the plaquette will help the local children of today understand the history of their village and take from it the message of positives of freedom and peace.

The two schools closest to the site of the disaster will help ensure the memorial site is maintained for years to come.

A Legion spokesperson said: "We would be most grateful for any help in the search for relatives of Flt Sgt Cairns, so that they have the opportunity to learn of, and attend, the ceremony if they wish to do so.

"The appeal for relatives is a long shot, but if anyone can identify with this appeal or has relevant information they can pass on, please email sasbranchsecyrbls@gmail.com."
