Millport's Festival of Light will hopefully be fully illuminated with plans in place for new seafront illuminations.

Last month, the colourful seafront festoon lights which stretch along the seafront were taken down by the council due to age and disrepair.

The local authority said that they hoped the colourful lights would be procured and on display in time for the September illuminations weekend, which is also hosting a one-off Festival of Light celebration. The Isle of Cumbrae Tourist Association have been actively pursuing the matter.

Island resident Suki McGregor, who has been active in various community events on the island, has been in correspondence with North Ayrshire Council Lighting Department on the matter.

In response to her concerns, Gary Wilson, Team Manager (Lighting), said: "The tender process for procurement of materials was prioritised by my lighting team and the council's procurement section within a very short timeline to ensure the winning supplier had the earliest possible opportunity for manufacture and delivery.

The recent process for Largs Promenade saw the supplier achieve manufacture and delivery within a five week period.

"This would place expected delivery of the Millport materials around the first or second week in September. The supplier has indicated that this is achievable.

"As I previously advised therefore, sadly, although the installation will not be complete for the Country and Western festival at the start of September, it will be in place in advance of the Festival of Light at the end of September.

Building Services have resources programmed to ensure this work can proceed at the earliest possible juncture after the materials are available, Mr Wilson added.

The illuminations weekend is the a major tourism boost which rounds off the summer season on 24-25 September, and this year, the island is also hosting a Festival of Light over the same weekend with the Garrison and Cathedral of the Lights featuring in a major illuminations display.

The new family festival has been announced to celebrate two of the Isle of Cumbrae’s most historic buildings as part of Scotland’s 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.
