Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international.

It was a good win for Largs against the Bens. I wasn’t at the game but hearing it was not the best with the weather a major factor. However, three points are three points, no matter the performance. Bens, on their day, are a hard team to beat so a good three points.

Largs now sitting in eighth position in the league on 15 points, which is the same as Hurlford and St Cadoc’s who are both above them on goal difference. And yes it was a straight red card.

I see that Darvel have issued a statement around their finances Is anyone surprised about that? Their heavy spending in recent years gave Darvel a high profile but it was never sustainable. Beith winning the title last season and thus blocking any chance Darvel had of promotion was a killer for them. I know clubs and supporters want success and if someone comes to your club with promises of that you take it but just make sure you don’t end up out of the game.

Darvel have been around since 1889 so a lot of history there. It will be interesting to see if the support they have had over the past couple of seasons remain, along with their big players.

I managed to watch a couple of big club derbies on TV at the weekend, Barcelona v Real Madrid and Man Utd v Man City. Oh how Man Utd must being kicking themselves. If the reports are true that they could have signed Jude Bellingham before he signed for Borussia Dortmund and could also have signed Erling Haaland before he went to Borussia too, how wrong did they get it. Both players being stars for their current clubs in the derbies, whoever made the decision not to sign these guys must be devastated.

Since Fergie retired Man Utd, despite all the managers and players that have gone there, have struggled big time to compete at the top. Just shows you how good a manager Fergie was.

At the weekend I also managed to get to the Atlanta Hawks v New York Knicks basketball game. What an experience for the fans. Can’t help but think that Scottish football clubs come up short in what they offer supporters.
