Largs Thistle skipper aiming for strong finish to the season

Adam had a knee operation last season, and while he has missed a few games this season through injury niggles, he says he loves being back in the thick of it in the ultra-competitive West of Scotland Football League's top flight, playing a valuable role in the Thistle frontline.

Largs are coming off a goalless draw against Benburb which keeps them in 11th spot, and while Thistle have no game this weekend, the rest of February is looking busy, with an away match against Glenafton followed by Irvine Meadow at home and a rescheduled trip to current leaders Clydebank.

Reflecting on Saturday's point at New Tinto Park, Adam, who had a first-half 'goal' ruled out for offside, said: “It was a tough game – in the early period it was fairly even and I think as the first half wore on we started to get a bit on top.

"We defended really well and we missed a couple of chances and on a few occasions, as it has been over recent weeks, it was just the final ball which let us down.

"We started well on top in the second half and we won the penalty after the keeper mis-hit a clearance and the ball only bounced 20 yards in front of him. I knocked the ball past him and he took me down.

"It was a good save from Will Sewell’s penalty kick, and after that I felt we had more of the ball. We just couldn’t get it over the line.

“I feel we have been putting in good performances but sometimes not getting the results we deserve. If you look back over the games against Auchinleck, Troon and Pollok, I think we put a lot into these games and were missed a lot of chances and gave away some bad goals.

"The performances have been good; it is just sharpening up at both ends of play and getting all the finer details.”

Adam played an important role in Thistle's first match of the new year, coming off the bench at Arthurlie to set up the deciding goal in a 2-1 win for Largs.

He said: “It was a tight game and with a man sent off in that game we had to make a couple of subs.

"We notched the late goal. It was a tight game with Darryl Duffy sent off in that game as well, but it is funny how you can still get a psychological edge in these kind of fixtures.

"We made a couple of subs, and I helped set up David Ramsay and it was great for Will, after all his running in the game to compensate for the ten men, still to have the presence of mind to be at the back post to tap home the winner.”

Adam, who turns 35 in a few weeks' time, still got a full 90 minutes under his belt against Benburb on Saturday.

“I have had a few injuries and niggles this season but nothing too bad," he said.

"After my knee op last season, l returned to the fold last January and scored that goal against Troon when the train passed by at Portland Park and tooted!

"It was a good end to the season last year, and hopefully we can do it again this season.”

Adam has made a habit of finishing the season on a high, scoring the winning penalty when Largs defeated Rob Roy in 2021-22’s final fixture.

Adam said: “These are all good memories, but we want to make more good things happen.

"Getting a point on Saturday, albeit it could have been more, stabilises things, and although we want to be looking up the table we still have to be wary and it is important to keep picking up the points.

"It just takes one team below us to go on a good run, so all that matters from our point of view is to keep getting the points in the bag, and looking for victories in each and every game between now and the end of the season."

There is no competitive action but Largs Thistle players are instead taking part in a firewalk event at Barrfields Park this Saturday, February 3, to raise important funds for the club.
