Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...

Beith made a statement this weekend by beating Clydebank 2-1.

They are not going to give up their title easily. If I was to pick between Beith and Clydebank to win the league, it would be Beith, they are an Ayrshire team, I like their manager Chris Strain.

Largs are still sitting at 11th in the table despite having a free weekend.

They are away to Glenafton this week who are in 14th place and desperate for points to get away from relegation trouble. It won’t be an easy game for Largs but one they are capable of winning. A defeat could see them dragged into a relegation battle. Irvine Meadow were beaten again and unless they start picking up wins, they are gone. It’s not looking good.

The Scotland transfer window closed with a whimper on Thursday night. No real exciting signings for me by Rangers or Celtic but I guess time will tell. Kilmarnock look to have done the best deal by signing Kevin Van Veen. I hope it works out.

It is amazing to see Neil Warnock being handed the Aberdeen manager’s job. It is a boost for Scottish football. Think of the press conferences... Would he take Aberdeen back to being the third force in Scottish football? I am delighted that he has been given the chance. Others it seems in the frame for the job are Jack Ross, Neil Lennon and Alex Neil, for me though I think it was a no-brainer to go with Warnock. What an exciting appointment for the Scottish game.

In the Scottish Championship what a run Greenock Morton are on, 12 games unbeaten. I think I said it before but Dougie Imrie is my type of manager, in the Dickie Brock mould. The entrance fee at Cappielow is well worth it, sitting in the stand behind the Morton dugout. Well worth the entertainment you get. Could be a good night on Friday night at Cappielow when Morton play Motherwell in the cup.

I was very sad to hear of the death of Largs Thistle supporter Don Mackillop. He supported Largs home and away, and was always a friendly face to see at the football grounds. RIP Don.
