Football teams in West Kilbride are set to erect a fence in a bid to prevent dogs damaging the pitch.

West Kilbride AFC, who play in the Glen under a lease from North Ayrshire Council, maintain the park through hard work from its volunteers.

However, the club says it has been battling to maintain the pitch for several years, to help encourage youth teams to play on the park.

The club has now secured funding to build a fence around the park to keep animals out, but youngsters will still be able to use the facility moving forward.

A spokesperson said: "At the moment we face a constant battle maintaining the pitch due to damage from dogs digging holes in it and dog mess not being picked up.

"We have also had vehicles and horses damaging the pitch at various times over the past year.

"In order to protect the pitch, funding has been obtained for a new fence to be installed around the perimeter of the pitch and hopefully work will commence next month.

"We hope that the new fence will protect the pitch and allow us as much football as possible to be played in the Glen going forward.

"However, we don't want to discourage kids from playing on the pitch as we still view it as a community facility.

"We therefore have taken the decision to install a couple of stiles to allow continued access."
